Dear Diary,

I sat down to write a poem after what seems like ages, today. I would have never considered writing a poem had it not been for my best friend, who thought that I could do a really good job writing it. A lot of thought and a couple of writer’s blocks later, I finally came up with a single stanza. It wasn’t much, but I think I did good! I don’t know how to explain this. I felt as if a missing part of me was finally back in it’s own place. Then I began to think about everything I loved to do, but haven’t done in a very long time. I can’t be the only one…

Often we get so caught up with our lives that we forget to get back to the things that, in some way or the other, are a part of us. It doesn’t really matter how much of a part these things are- they make us who we are. The more that we drift away from these little things, the more we ensure that we’ll never be whole again.

“Passion and satisfaction go hand in hand, and without them, any happiness is only temporary, because there’s nothing to make it last.”
― Nicholas Sparks, Dear John

Come to think of it, there really isn’t a whole lot we can do about it. All of us have fast-paced lives and we’re practically drowning in work. But that doesn’t mean we give up on the things we  loved doing once. In fact, we should never give up on the things we love. If you’re really lucky, and very passionate about what you love (say, music), you would go ahead and make yourself a career out of it.

But for those who are passionate about several things and can’t possibly make a career out of all of them, you have hobbies. And that’s where it all starts. You develop a particular interest, you go ahead and take efforts to improve yourself- but you give up; why, because “it’s just a hobby, that’s all it is.

If only we all knew that hobbies are not “just hobbies,” but an important part of us that we should never  give up on.

“It is an axiom that no hobby should either seek or need rational justification. To wish to do it is reason enough. ”
― Aldo Leopold, A Sand County Almanac and Sketches Here and There

So, here’s what we’re all going to do- we are all going to try to get back to the things we once loved doing, but haven’t done in a  while. Dust that old sketchpad, bring out that guitar you haven’t touched in a while, go ahead and finish the song that you once started writing but never finished, take a look at all the books you bought but never got around to reading them… whatever it may be. It can be something as simple as taking a road trip with old friends for old times’ sake. Just do it.

It might not be much to start with, but it will ensure that no part of you drifts so far away from you that you are unable to bring it back. You never know, maybe you’re still good at what you love and all you needed was a little push. Take some time out for your hobbies once in a while so that you have something to keep you grounded to the person you actually are.

Try taking a  time-out from life, you guys. You’ll understand why it was worth it.

Cheerio! Xx

  1. Hey
Thank you for taking the time to step on over to Love Relaished Ink. It’s wonderful to have your whimsical soul as a new companion on my long and winding road.
From what I have seen of your blog so far, I’ve no doubt you are already finding writing a totally engaging and personally fulfilling experience. I hope the pleasurable company of words will always flow and follow you as you flow following the flow of your flowing path flowing into the wide blue yonder, and flow onwards towards the adventures that follow the flow beyond that…
Best wishes. Take care always in all ways for always.
