5 Important Lessons Friendships Taught Me.

Friendships, like everything in life, can either be really good for our growth as an individual, or they can take us on a trip downhill. I’ve already talked about how negative and toxic friendships affect us (read it here if you haven’t already), but there is also so much good that friendships bring us.

I’ve always felt as though the friendships I’ve chosen to build in life have shaped me into the person I am today (among other things). I know for a fact that friendships teach us more lessons than we can ever learn in school or college.

So, here are 5 lessons that I learnt from my friendships:

1. Friends always come before relationships.
I don’t care what you call it— ‘Bros before hoes‘, ‘Sisters before misters‘ or ‘Fries before guys‘, it’s the most sacred rule of friendships. No guy or girl is worth ditching your friends. Never let love come in the way of your friendships. It just isn’t worth it.

2. You’ll end up making friends in the most unlikely ways.
I’ve made some amazing friends in crazy parties, confused crowds and fandom group wars. I never thought that this would happen to me because it’s so crazy, it could be a movie. But when you grow up a little and your school-mates drift away, you’ll discover how long you’ve known someone doesn’t matter when it comes to friendships.

3. You don’t have to keep people who bring negative vibes around.
When you love and respect yourself truly, you’ll realize that a lot of ‘friendships‘ are just masked ulterior motives for your downfall, even if it’s for a petty reason. Some people can’t succeed on their own, so they try to bring down people who are on their way to the top. If you truly value yourself, you shouldn’t be afraid to let these people go for the fear of being left alone.

4. Your real friends will always be proud of your achievements.
In a world where everyone’s trying to bring each other down, it’s kinda’ nice to have someone who will have your back no matter what. It’s one of the purest and most selfless kinds of happiness that we will experience in life. Success tastes so much sweeter when you have people to share it with.

5. When it’s real, the distance won’t matter.
You can simply pick up where you left off when you meet after a long hiatus and you’ll catch up somewhere between reminiscing and lots of hugs and laughter. Distance doesn’t drive a wedge between friends because when you truly care about your friends and vice versa, you’ll find a way to go above and beyond to protect and nurture your friendship. Besides, you live in the age of social media. What are you so sad about?

When you find the right set of friends, you’ll realize that friends can be a really good influence. After all, friendship is a constant process of learning and unlearning. You never know when you’ll learn things that you never knew.
