What’s the first thing that comes to your mind when you think about self-care? Maybe a nice face-mask, scented candles, massages, spas, bath salts or just an extra long nap? Yes, self-care is all of those things. But that’s not everything that there is to self-care. In fact, it barely scratches the surface. Self-care isn’t all rosy and sparkly as it sounds.
The real meaning self-care is realizing the needs of your body, mind and soul. It is probably the hardest thing you’ll ever have to do for anyone. Taking care of everyone around you? That’s easy because you can put aside all of your worries and focus on something else.
But the thing is, all of your problems are still going to be there, piling up in a corner somewhere; they won’t magically disappear because you chose to ignore them. And someday, they’ll reach a tipping point and you’ll have no choice but to tackle them, but you’ll be knee-deep in them. That is why self-care is so important.
Self-care is allowing yourself those little moments where you’re weak. It’s allowing yourself to let out a good cry, sinking into a corner and take deep breaths while you have your head on your knees, long showers where all you do is think. It’s the ugly, but most important part of self-care, because there is no real meaning to happiness unless you acknowledge all the pain you’re leaving behind.
Self-care is taking a moment to assess the mess that you think your life is right now. And what do you do when your room or your closet is a mess? You clean and re-organize it. That’s exactly what self-care is, too. It’s not just cleaning up all the errors and problems from your past, but also re-organizing your life.
Sure, it’s also about a quiet cup of warm tea, a bar of your favourite chocolate, a Rom-Com marathon, a day spent reading or napping, a getaway, or booking yourself into a luxurious spa treatment. It is all of that. But it’s a little unfair that most self-help books will only show you the sparkly side of self-love, and not the messy parts where all you feel like doing is to stare into the oblivion.
Once we start to acknowledge the messy parts of our lives, we can also focus on how to get better, and how to snap out of whatever rock bottom you’re in right now. It certainly isn’t easy, but it’s doable once you accept some of the harsher truths about self-care.
Since we’re all on the journey towards loving and caring for ourselves this month, I thought that it was essential for you to know that self-care isn’t always aromatherapy and green tea. It’s also letting yourselves grieve when the situation demands it and most importantly, not bottling up your emotions.
