Day 19: Dealing with Creative Blocks.

Ironically, admitting to myself that I don’t know what I am going to write today is what gave me the idea to write this post. There are times when we feel a little disconnected from everything, no matter how much we love them. This can happen because you’re not in the right state of mind, or because you’re worried you won’t be able to do it the kind of justice that it deserves. And I’m not going to lie, but I didn’t feel like writing anything today.

But in the spirit of the month of self-discovery, I decided that I wasn’t about to break my streak. Not when I have just crossed a milestone of writing every single day for 201 days here. And after I did a fair bit of digging, I realized that I am the crankiest when I am creatively blocked. Like a few minutes before I typed this out. I literally poured half a bottle of water on my brother because he wouldn’t shut up and now I’m just weirdly calm and collected.

On days like these, when I am unable to get any kind of creativity squeezed out of me, I surround myself with inspiration. I scroll through my Pinterest for hours, I read a good book, watch something on Netflix, put on some music— anything that helps me feel like myself again and I am good to go. And if everything else fails, I either write in my journal or take a nap to hit reset and hope it works.

Dealing with creative blocks has never been easy for me. In spite of what I just said, the amount of inspiration that I am surrounded by gets a little too intimidating sometimes. It has had me second-guessing my abilities as a writer or artist because I worry I am not as good as the ones I idolize, and sometimes I worry that I might never be.

But then I remind myself about the time when somebody asked me if I wanted to be the second ‘XYZ person’ and I snapped back saying that I wanted to be the first and only me. Creative blocks don’t have to mean that I am not good enough or that I have run out of ideas. Because sometimes, they are just a sign that I am overwhelmed with too many ideas and I just need to catch a break to think straight.

Truth is, no matter how many outlets for creativity we choose to have, there is no shortage of inspiration in this world where every second person is a creative mind with millions of new concepts to blow your mind. There is always going to be someone better than you but that doesn’t have to mean that you cannot be successful too! So, the only way any of us can beat a creative block is if we take a step back and analyze what the reason for feeling blocked is.

You can get through this. Have some faith in yourself!

Cheerio! Xx
