How Do We Accept Change?

Change, like many other things, is happening all around us. Whether we like it or not, whether it is in our favour or against us, whether we are ready for it or otherwise.

It isn’t uncommon for us to feel as though everything around us is shifting a lot faster than we can keep up. Change sneaks up on you when you least expect it. You might not notice it initially, but change is going to happen and you’re a part of it, whether you know it or not.

It’s one of the most beautiful, yet the most nerve-wracking thing that any of us will ever have to go through. And the moment we decide that nothing will change, things inevitably change, leaving us feeling as though the ground has shifted beneath us, leaving us face-down in the dirt.

How does a person bring themselves to embrace sudden change when they’ve had other plans for their lives?

Well, you know, the thing about plans; they change all the time. There is no plan that goes a hundred percent smoothly without some aspect of it being improvised because of, well, reasons. But this is what life is. It’s a series of events leading up to constant change; whether these events are fortunate or unfortunate is for us to decide.

i'm not gonna look

When I look at the world around me, I realize that so much has changed so quickly and a lot more is about to change in the near future. I have no idea how I am ever going to bring myself to adapt to these changes. But I know that I’ve been met with similar situations before. I know that some of these situations are all too new for me to know what to do. I know that there is a lot for me to learn and there is a lot that I will struggle with. But that part of change, that acceptance comes with all the learning that change brings.

How we accept change decides what path we will walk on.

We could throw a tantrum and stand our ground, saying that we do not want to embrace change, come what may; we could stand tall and straight in the face of a storm and let ourselves be uprooted. Or, we could embrace the change that is coming our way and try to find a way to channel that change into something productive; something that actually takes us on the path we want to walk.

Our choices affect the way we embrace change. It goes both ways.

everything is connected

Always remember that change isn’t the easiest thing, no matter how many times you’ve done it before. The growing pains ease up over time, though. Someone once told me that things don’t really get smaller over time, but we grow up and our entire perspective shifts. And it’s one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever heard.

Remember those days when we were all just mere kids, and the switchboards and door handles would seem too high up for us to reach? Remember how everything looked much bigger to us from that perspective? And remember how we grew up and realized that things were always the way they were, but it was just we who changed? Yeah. That. But applied to just about everything in life.

That’s how change works.

thats how it's gonna be

Change has always been a part of all our lives. We’ve just become more aware of it now that we’ve grown up. Some of us are still struggling with change. Some of us are more easily adaptable than the others. And some of us are slowly coming to terms with it. And all of us are very valid for that. There is no rulebook to teach any of us how to go about these changes and how to embrace them.

That only comes with acceptance.

And how do we accept change?

We let it mould us. We let it shape us. We bend with the storm and let ourselves stand rooted to the ground at the end of it all instead of being rigid only to be uprooted. There is so much learning and unlearning going on. We might not know it, but we’re embracing change, a little at a time.

one step at a time

Here’s to all of us, for every battle we’ve won or lost, every single choice that led us here and every little bit of change that has shaped us into the people we are today. We will always be governed by factors, either friendly or unfriendly, that will play an important role in shaping us, and by extension, our lives. We might be bound by certain restrictions that we are powerless against, and I understand how a lot of people can’t really do anything about them. But the fact that they still find a way to remain hopeful and embrace that piece of change gives me so much hope that maybe we can make change work in our favour, too.

I hope this is something we will always remember every single time we find ourselves wondering why change is so hard. And when the time comes, I hope we can make choices that are right for us and right by us.

Cheerio! Xx
