Today’s prompt via napowrimo.net is to write a poem that consists of alliteration, consonance, and assonance. If you’re unfamiliar with the terms, take a look at this post by NaPoWriMo here. When I looked at the poetry resource provided, I immediately thought of an evening from years ago where I decided I wanted to take a train all the way to the other side of the city just so I could sit on the rocks by the sea and watch the sun set.
There is a lot to learn from nature, and just one evening by the sea can give you endless inspiration. It was, as some would call it, a ‘core memory’ for me, to have a huge rock all to myself with nobody to disturb my peace as I sat there and took photos of the sea, tried to sketch the scenery, or write a few lines about my evening there.
I don’t know when I can do that again; go sit by the sea to simply just exist in the moment without trying to think of a million different things. I hope it’s sometime soon, but until then, here’s a poem that I wrote about it to remind myself what it was like.
Happy reading! Xx
A crimson star dips, ends the day,
Dusk descends, draping the sea,
The sun sets with a soft, slumbering sigh,
The sky steeped in serenity.
The shore stands stoic, the stones stand dark,
Steadfast against the ceaseless swell,
Salty spray whispers the secrets old,
The silence by the sea sighs a somber farewell.
Whispers weave through waves and reeds,
Wind whistles wild and free,
Water whispers on weathered walls,
Washing worries out to sea.
Waves crash constant in crashing chorus,
Crushing calm with constant beat,
Celestial canvas, cool and clear,
Cloaked in colors, bittersweet.
The evening echoes, empty expanse,
Echoes crash of ocean’s roar,
Ebbing tide erases etchings,
Etched on edges of the shore.
The hush hangs heavy, harbor shushed,
Holding onto fading light,
Horizon holds the heart of heaven,
Bathed in beauty of the night.
