#NaPoWriMo Day 22: Fluttering Time.

Today’s prompt via napowrimo.net is to write a poem about two unlikely things bickering about something. I thought about it for a while and I realized that time stops for no one. The clock keeps ticking and there’s no way for us to stop that. But there are creatures in the world that are not bound by time. A butterfly, a symbol of freedom and innocence, doesn’t quite abide by the same rules of time as humans do. Its lifespan is tragically short as it is, but the butterfly doesn’t know that because it isn’t familiar with the concept of time like we are.

So natually, I had to write about these two. I’d say I did pretty well with this poem. It’s not too long, and it manages to get the point across. It’s one of my better works this month and I am glad I get to share it with everyone. I have to say, this year’s prompts are great. I don’t usually follow every single prompt given. If you’ve seen my poems from last year or so, I often deviated from prompts because I didn’t really have the energy to sit and think. But this year, I’m giving it a go, at least 99%, and it’s going great so far.

Finally, here’s the poem for today!
Happy reading. Xx

With fluttering wings,
In a bright, painted blur,
Landed on a clock,
A butterfly.
Alarmed at all the ticking,
“Why fuss with your hands?” it cried,
“Time is but a river that flows,
With no place to hide.”

Tick-tock,
Went the clock,
In a voice stern and deep,
“Without minutes to measure,” he chides,
“Without track of hours to keep,
We’d all fall asleep!”

The butterfly laughed,
A shimmer of glee,
Destined to forever be free,
Asks “But where’s the fun,
My rigid friend,
In all that predictability?”

The clock paused
Slowing down ticking,
In an uncharacteristic, thoughtful beat,
“Perhaps you’re right,
There lies Time’s beauty–
It’s both structure and treat.”

So the butterfly danced,
Fluttering away,
Ever so carefree,
As the clock ticked
In usual rhythm,
One bound by time, one free.
