#NaPoWriMo 29: Elegy.

As we come to a close on the NaPoWriMo season, I have my favourite prompt for the season so far: Today’s prompt via napowrimo.net was to take a word from Merriam-Webster’s list of words used in Taylor Swift’s songs, in honour of her latest album ‘The Tortured Poets Department’! If you know me, you also know that I love all things Taylor Swift, and it’s no surprise that this is my favourite prompt of the month! I chose the word ‘elegy’ used in her songs titled ‘the lakes’, which happens to be one of my most favourite songs of all time!

And as we go into the second to last day of NaPoWriMo, I just wanted to mention how proud I am of myself for keeping up with it, every single day, even if I did take my time. I found myself finding a little bit of myself when I started writing here again, and it’s been wonderful so far.

Anyway, I will save the sentimental stuff for the final post of NaPoWriMo tomorrow! Until then, here is today’s poem. Happy reading! Xx

Caved ceilings
And fallen debris
Lie where our home once stood,
Quiet and eerie,
An echo of all the laugher
And love of the carefree,
No amount of torn grief
Can be contained in an elegy.
All that remains
Is a ghost of has-beens,
And burnt shadows
Of what-could-bes,
Everything we’d ever built
Now lies deceased,
All there is left in me
Is this pain, and these elegies.
If I dug under far and deep,
Until my knuckles bruise bloody,
I’d find whatever little remains
Of a faraway dream–
Alas, all there is left
Is the a distant memory,
Preserved in my heart for all time,
And in unwritten, unsung elegies.
