The prompt for day 17 via napowrimo.net is to pick a song we like and write a poem inspired by it, and title our poems after the same.
It comes as no surprise to anyone that I chose this particular song. I am a romantic at heart, and a really huge Swiftie, too! Maybe it’s the fact that I have grown up listening to Taylor Swift’s music for as long as I’ve had access to international music, or maybe it’s because there’s something about her songs that always seem to hit home, I’ll never be able to tell. But this song in particular is one I chose because lately, I’ve been a lot more appreciative of my best friends than I have ever been before. And it’s not like I was any less appreciative of them, it’s just that in shared experiences of girlhood, we’ve become closer than ever before.
A couple of weeks ago, I was on a trip with one of my best friends, and we met our other best friend. We totally lost track of time and kept talking and laughing for hours. At one point I just had to pause myself and look at the two of them, wondering how I got so lucky, that even in a time when I am still healing, I have these incredible people to lean on. And when the situation demands it, I would do the same for them, without a second thought.
So, here’s the poem, once again dedicated to people who are the closest to me.
Happy reading! Xx
I love with everything I have, I’m often told,
‘Nothing I didn’t know before
I love reckless and unrestrained,
And all kinds of bold,
Trying to fix what I never broke.
I live in pockets of moments–
In these moments, I celebrate
Everything I didn’t ask to become,
Everything I didn’t make,
I once again fix what I didn’t break.
Emotions often run high,
The lows are always too low,
But for a moment,
Surrounded by laughter and warmth,
Singing some Taylor Swift songs too loud,
I find myself fixing what I never broke.
In the clinking of glasses,
In the bubbling conversations, I see
Feeble, but very much alive, parts of me,
It was never my lovers who made me whole,
It was my confidantes and their camaraderie.
Where we’re drunk on smiles,
Making memories,
High off of life, no matter what it brings,
Singing, ‘We’re the New Romantics,
The best people in life are free.’
