I have been so busy having fun these last couple of days, I have almost (focus on the ‘almost’) forgotten that this month, I wanted to keep up with my writing. Nevertheless, I have tried to keep up with NaPoWriMo, even if my work has been a little delayed. In the spirit of poetry though, I think it’s important enough that I am even trying given that I have a million other things going on right now. But this month has always been the most fun I have writing, and I am stubborn to keep things that way. For what it’s worth, I think I will keep up more diligently (or try to, more).
Today’s prompt via napowrimo.net is to write a poem about an encounter or a relationship that should’ve never even happened in the first place. In true fashion, I have chosen to write about a human who has fallen for a star and in return spent their entire life yearning for it. But as we all know, nobody can ever truly touch a star without getting either burnt or entirely wiped out. Pretty symbolic, isn’t it?
Without further ado, here’s the poem I wrote! Happy reading! Xx
You shine brighter than most, a diamond forged in the sun, more brilliant than any star in existence; while they glitter and twinkle, you burn. I admire you from afar, forever enthralled, perpetually in awe, and if I didn’t know any better, I’d say it was love. And perhaps it is so, perhaps so much more— my blue lips and tired bones relentlessly swimming to find the warmth of your solid shore.
You are as elusive as ever, as a star is to every mortal soul. I am a moth to your flame, I would rather burn than be out here in the cold. I swim to you, my ship all wrecked, my lungs drowning in fear and salt. It’s as tragic as ever, a human falling for a star, destined to be light years away, and eternities of memories apart. If It weren’t for this ache in me, this gravity that draws me to you, I might just give up entirely on this hopelessly foolish pursuit.
But if another stood in my weary shoes, looking at you from where I stand, they’d comprehend this fascination I hold for you. Drawn closer and closer to the warmth you bring, just for one touch of your fiery glow, even if only for a fleeting moment, even if that is the furthest I can go. So my hand reaches out further towards you, a star brighter than the sun, defying all logic, all reason, even when I should’ve known better than to love you knowing all I’d get is burnt.
