The prompt for day 19 via napowrimo.net was to write a poem about something that haunts us, or keeps us awake at night. And when we were done, we were asked to change the word to ‘hunt’ or ‘hunted’ from ‘haunt’ or ‘haunted’. The change is pretty simple but it gave the poem an entirely new perspective. I struggled writing this poem because I didn’t really know how to go about it, but I think I am super proud of how the poem turned out to be.
My biggest fear is that I will be replaced and left all alone, that I am not good enough. I don’t know where the fear stems from, don’t ask me. I have no idea what made me feel that way, but it is definitely something that keeps me awake in the middle of the night. It’s a pretty personal poem. Then again, the poem is also a reminder that no matter what happens, the story is mine to be told. Sometimes, we just need a reminder of how far we’ve come in life, and that’s just what I did for myself with this poem.
Happy reading! Xx
The whispers start, a chilling breeze,
Of something new that might appease.
A younger face, a sharper mind,
A fear takes root, a doubt I find.
Haunted by the thought, the creeping dread,
That all I’ve built might soon be dead.
The skills I honed, the battles won,
Will fade to dust beneath the sun.
I see it mirrored in their eyes,
A hunger for the future’s prize.
My touch is sure, my steps are strong,
But will they last? Where do I belong?
The whispers rise, a hunting cry,
A challenger for what is nigh.
A younger face, a sharper mind,
A thrill of fear, a race to find
The hunted edge, the will to thrive,
To keep this purpose I hold alive.
The skills I honed, the battles won,
Will be the fire to outrun.
I see it burning in their gaze,
A spark that fuels my inner blaze.
My touch refines, my purpose bold,
This future’s mine, the story’s told.
