Once again, I have chosen to deviate from the NaPoWriMo prompts because I found something incredibly inspiring in my friend Leon’s reels. He showed me a flight of birds that he managed to take a video of; they all flew together in a perfect formation. You can watch his video here; it’s incredibly beautiful. I’ve always wondered how migratory birds always know when and where to go. Of course, I’ve learned all the scientific reasons behing this, but I have always believed that there could be more at play here.
Poetically speaking, perhaps love?
I wrote this poem keeping in mind the duality of the word ‘flight’. Not only does it mean to fly through the air, but it is also a word used for a group of birds. This thought hadn’t ocurred to me until I saw my friend’s reel today, and it immediately felt like the perfect thing to write about. There’s not much for me to summarize for you, here. It’s a poem about finding your way back home after a long, long journey. How you interpret this one is up to you. I am very proud of it.
Happy reading! Xx
A whispered wind,
A call unseen,
A restlessness,
A flock convenes.
No maps unfurled,
No compass to guide,
Just ancient knowledge
Etched in tides.
A feathered flight,
A swirling mass,
They paint the sky,
A fleeting class.
At the break of dawn,
Their wings would rise,
A silent symphony
In golden sunrise.
Below them sprawls
A world unknown,
Forests and fields,
A patchwork overgrown.
But carved inside
Each beating heart,
Lies a memory
Destined to start.
The sun, a compass,
Dips and turns,
The heart homeward bound
For familiarity yearns.
And across the miles
Flies a valiant flight,
Against the dusk,
Piercing through light.
And as the moon,
Their silver guide,
Watches them through
The evening tide,
A silhouette,
A purpose found,
They touch down,
Safe, on hallowed ground.
For home is never
Just a place to stay,
But where our wings
First learned to play.
The flight within,
The flight above,
A tapestry woven,
Bound by love.
