“You at the back,” a stern voice calls,
“Are you with us?”
It’s not the first time she has asked me that,
I’ve heard it all before.
“Stop daydreaming and pay attention!”
Trust me, I’ve tried my best.
I just can’t.
It’s not the book I’ve been hiding under
My desk, behind a pile of notes;
It’s just that no matter what,
Sometimes I let myself get carried away.
I like to think I’m living the story.
It lets me go places that don’t exist.
It lets my imagination wander,
Pretend I’m a Witch, or a Demigod
Going around saving the world.
My heart aches that it isn’t real–
The world we live in is far too grim.
People obsessed with unrealistic perfection,
God forbid you make the tiniest mistake!
They’ll come for you, with words like swords
And chop your wings of wonder.
I’ll be damned if I was ever caged like that!
I believe in all of it–
Mermen, Magic and Mystery.
“Please focus,” the same voice calls out,
Snapping me back to reality like an anchor.
“I guess I did it again,” I smirk
And try not to let my mind wander,
Or maybe I’ll just let it.
