#NaPoWriMo Day 13: A Lazy Summer Day.

Today’s prompt via napowrimo.net was a real thinker! We were asked to pick out ten monosyllabic or disyllabic words– five words associated with our five senses, three concrete nouns, and two verbs. And then, we were asked to pick out words that rhymed with the word bank we made. Of course, since there was so much to think about, it took me a while. But in the spirit of summer, I decided to write a very simple poem that might as well be in a primary school textbook.

I don’t really know why, but this poem feels nostalgic. It’s simple, it’s summer-y, and it’s exactly what I wanted it to be. So, I hope you like reading it too!
Happy reading. Xx

Sunlight streams through my dusty loft,
Birdsong whispers, gentle, soft.
Days stretch long, lazy, sweet,
Nowhere to be, nobody to meet.

Heavy heat stirs in the air,
The world slows down, I’m just there.
Waiting for the evening’s fading light,
While stars like diamonds, burn ever so bright.

Out come the cicadas, a joyous crowd,
Music pulsates, voices ring out loud.
Days at the beach end with sand on the floor,
Our exhausted smiles, wanting nothing more.

Leaves in the breeze, a summer so brief,
A shade in the sun, a welcome relief.
Barefoot sprints on the scalding stone,
Summer this year isn’t the same, alone.

When the season winds down, nearly done,
The memories will stay, like a beloved one.
I often close my eyes just so I can see,
And feel the warmth of what once used to be.
