Let me catch my breath for a second because I am still laughing at how wonderfully senseless, but relatable writing today’s poem has been. It has scratched an itch in my brain that I didn’t know needed to be scratched, in the first place! I have to say, after a long day of work, spending my creative energy on writing on this blog feels like a breath of fresh air, after so long!
I have always marvelled at people who can write things that are senseless and nonsensical, and still add a charm to it that one simply can’t put a finger on. Something about writing nonsensical things is so difficult to someone like me because I have always been used to writing down my thoughts in poetry, that was very much inspired by the music and the books that I grew up consuming. But you know, there are songs that make zero sense, and still have a way of staying in your head for a very, very long time. That’s the kind of writing that I have secretly always wanted to be good at.
For some reason, the poet side of my brain decided that today would be the day I wrote something nonsensical that I was actually proud of. Of course, the poem is written purely for my own satisfaction, but if you enjoy it, hey– at least I have one more thing to be proud of! I’m surprised to say I actually had so much fun writing something like this poem, which I never thought I would.
Today’s prompt via napowrimo.net was to write a poem that directly addresses someone or something, incorporates a made-up word and an unusual simile, has a statement or a fact, and also include something that doesn’t feel like it quite belongs in the poem. Points for everyone who can spot which lines from my poem incorporate all these!
I don’t hope for this poem to move souls or touch hearts, or anything like that, really. But I do think it would be a fun read. Maybe those who have tried their hand at writing poetry in the past would be familiar with the feeling that I’m going for with my poem. But, like I said, this poem was purely for myself. It was to write something mindless, and most importantly, to have fun.
And you bet that’s exactly what I did!
A pen in hand,
A sheet of paper in white,
I doodle and dawdle as my thoughts unwind.
A sip of tea,
And a quick snack bite,
I let my words take the shape of a rhyme.
A deep sigh here,
A quick, rough sketch scrawled,
I look at the words like they’re dynamite.
A few words in,
A fair more of them struck out,
I pause and wonder, then begin to write.
A letter penned,
To you, dearest reader,
If you’re here, then you should know,
A little glance,
A speedy run-through past,
Isn’t really how you read a poem.
A verse or two,
A minute or a fair few,
Is when you begin to realize it,
A rhyme or so,
A rhythm or maybe more,
Is slowly taking over as you read this.
‘A moment spent,
A pattern penned down’,
Is probably what Shakespeare thought, too!
A missed message,
A meaningless end,
For a poem that was just some gibbery-doodle-doo.

Hi again! If you’re new to my blog, welcome, and if you’re not, welcome back!
Day 2 of NaPoWriMo was so fun, and I now have high hopes for the prompts that will come our way in the next few days! That being said, I hope you liked my poem! If you did, I’d love to hear from you, so don’t be shy and let me know your thoughts in the comments! It would mean the world to me if you think others would appreciate the things I write and if you shared my work with them!
Until tomorrow, then?
Cheerio! Xx
