‘Brain Dump’.

We all have those days when we’re just feeling kinda’ ‘blah’ or ‘meh’, right?

Either we don’t feel motivated enough (you can read about how to deal with that here, by the way), or we don’t understand how to channel our creative energy effectively.

It’s not that we can’t think of any good ideas for whatever project we’re working on, personal or professional. A very common analogy for this is having too many browser tabs open at the same time and not knowing where the music is coming from. We often don’t understand what to start working on first, so we bounce from one idea to another, which ends up taking a lot of our time.

Not that I’m an expert on dealing with creative blocks, but in the past few weeks, I have figured out a few really fun methods that could work. While Pinterest and writing prompts help me a little every now and then, it’s always better to have a  backup plan or two. The best of them is known as the ‘brain dump’.

Being in touch with your thoughts is the logic behind the ‘brain dump’. It started out as a joke that I didn’t think would work, but now, pouring the ideas in my head onto a piece of paper feels like the best way to break through whatever is stopping me from writing or creating.

Whenever I feel like an idea could work, I write it down.  I write down everything that comes to me along with that idea. Any word, any phrase, references from pop-culture, song lyrics, quotes that inspire me— anything and everything that I’m thinking of at that moment. A lot of my notebooks have pages and margins covered with ideas, doodles and whatnot.

The brain dump works so well for me because when I engage myself in the process of scribbling down the ideas in my head, one or the other is bound to make an impact enough for me to write about, or at the very least, contemplate it. When I start pouring out whatever is inside my head, new ideas begin to form, and this cycle goes on.

I hope this gives you an answer if you’re not feeling so creative today. Even if it’s not what you’re looking for, at least you now know how to deal with this situation if you’re ever in one!

Happy brain dumping!

Cheerio! Xx
