Flavours of Life.

In the middle of a very random discussion today, the topic somehow changed to a dish that we make during festivals, using raw mangoes, jaggery, flowers from the neem tree, a little bit of red chilli and a few other things that I have no idea about. The point is that this dish is supposed to signify all flavours of life— sweet, spicy, bitter, sour, etc. It sounds sort of pointless if you put it the way I am doing right now, but I don’t really have the words for it. But after a little bit of thinking, I realized that a lot of things that don’t really make sense on the surface are often very deep.

Funny how talking about a dish makes you think so much, isn’t it?

I don’t really have much to say about this, but here’s what I took away from the conversation:

We all know that life is unpredictable and anybody who has watched Inside Out knows that the happiness in our life often has no value if not for the other emotions that we feel along the way. I am not romanticizing any other emotion here, but I can tell you that life really is all about the ups and downs that we all go through. This isn’t about finding any kind of meaning in the lows. This isn’t about finding meaning in the highs, either. It’s just one of those things that just is.

You never know what comes next. You never know when you’re going to feel like getting three things done all at once, you never know when you’re going to feel so down in the dumps that you can’t even get yourself to do a single thing. And I’m here to tell you that all of it is okay. All of it is valid. All of it is human. In my best friend’s words it’s “raw, messed up, beautiful“.

It’s never the same experience for experience for everyone; some have it better, some worse. But having somebody who will just be there for you to hold your hand through it all, or just being that person for yourself, or getting the help that you need to get through it, makes all of that slightly more bearable. It’s really all about how you want to see it.

And no matter how what the flavour of your life is, remember that it’s still valid. Nobody gets to tell you otherwise.

Cheerio! Xx
