Lies and Gilded Cages.

Forever is a lie,
One we tell ourselves,
It isn’t any easier to let go,
We commit perfect crimes
All in the name of love,
Doing all we can, never saying so.
Writing letters too long
That they’ll never read,
But we hold on to the hope of someday,
They never wrote us back
And all we lost was sleep
Asking ourselves if it was all worth it.

All the time that has passed us by,
All the time that we have wasted,
And empty words we hold on to,
Trapped forever in a lie,
Looked for love in all the wrong places,
Lies we once believed were true.

Yet all we do is lie
And lie some more,
Until there’s nothing left for us here,
No tears we could cry,
We shed them all before
We found ourselves right here.
Stories of love so sweet,
We believe in empty words
So blind, there was no saving,
Head over heels
We were meant to fall,
At least our scars are fading.

Forever is a lie,
And it runs so deep,
We fill our empty pages
With words that we write
For people who leave,
We’re trapped in our gilded cages.

I figured it has been a while since I actually wrote proper content here. I started writing this as I played around with words, around two hours before I posted this. My favourite thing about writing poems is that I always think of them as though they’re songs and I write them around a tune that I just mindlessly find myself humming. This is just another one of those poems that will never be a song, but at least, something is better than nothing. This poem is, obviously, about the lies that we keep telling ourselves when we find things slipping out of our lives because the thought of letting go is just too painful. Then again, some things are better when they remain gone because, whether you realize it or not, it’s a weight that is lifted off of your chests. I hope you like reading it.
Yours truly,
The Shubhster. Xx
