Today’s prompt by napowrimo.net was to write a Skeltonic or tumbling verse, where the stanzas comprise of short and rhyming lines with 2-3 stressed syllables.
I must admit, this poem was very fun to write! I did not have an idea in mind, but I told my best friend Kriti about how this reminded me of Taylor Swift’s song ‘It’s Nice To Have A Friend‘, and she said that it also reminded her of Taylor Swift’s song ‘seven‘. I drew inspiration for the poem from a number of different songs that follow a similar style. Hopefully, I’ve done a good job of it.
Make sure you go check out Kriti (Kittu’s Modern Mixtape) and Anupriya’s (Amour Infini) blogs for more amazingly written poetry!
Happy reading, and don’t miss the endnotes for more! Xx
Golden, early that summer,
I will always remember
Staring at you in wonder,
Wishing I could look at you longer—
You made my heartbeats stutter,
I couldn’t think of another,
Dreams painted in your colours,
That’s how I’ll always remember;
How it painted
All the skies red,
I was looking at you instead,
In my tracks, I stopped dead,
Air heavy with the words left unsaid,
Standing by that rose bed,
Poinciana petals on the ground, spread,
All the roads we walked here led,
And every tear shed
Tied us by a thread.
I remember being painted blue,
Like all my skies before you,
Your gaze on my skin, tattooed,
A fire I could get used to
As your dark eyes pierce me through,
I’d burn for you—
In red and golden
Like the sun.
You clung to me like the skies grey
After the last drop of the first rain,
In the silence of the dawn, you slipped away
Leaving me promises of yet again;
‘Meet me by the staircase,
Take my hand, we can run away,’
Through the best nights and the worst days,
Quiet whispers saying ‘I’ll stay’.
Hydrangeas by your door,
Pathways painted azure,
I remember standing on your porch,
Hands held, asking, ‘Are you sure?’
Darling, I’ve never wanted anything more.
I remember that smile you wore
When you swept me off the floor,
How you told me, ‘I am forever yours,’
I was lost in your allure,
You’re everything I’d ever looked for.
I remember being marked in blue,
You told me it was for your eyes and you,
Your name on my skin, tattooed,
A fire I could get used to,
As your dark eyes searched me through,
I’d burn for you—
In red and golden
Like the sun.

Okayyyyy, so this poem is obviously inspired by the fluttery little feeling we all get when we listen to love songs, or just when we imagine what being in love would feel like (or when we’re actually in love, but I wouldn’t know; I have only terrible examples to write about). We often associate big, larger-than-life gestures with love, but this poem is more about the quiet, little moments that never reach anybody’s ears because the best things are always kept to ourselves. It’s all-consuming, heady, intoxicating and a bunch of other things I’ve only read about. I hope this poem does it justice.
Yours truly,
The Shubhster. Xx
