It is always said that expectations never bring anything but disappointment.
But when you look into it deeper, you begin to realize that it isn’t the expectation or the result that ended up causing us the pain, rather, it was the knowledge that our efforts weren’t given the credit they deserved. Of course, it is futile to expect certain things sometimes, but when you have high hopes for your goals and dreams, and you know you’re doing your absolute best to do something about it, it’s only natural to want for the best.
If something is very important to us, and if we have been working really hard for it, we shouldn’t be made to feel as though we are asking too much by demanding what we truly think we deserve, keeping in mind the work that has gone into whatever project it may be. Whether our work seems big or small to the world outside, nobody but us understands the value of it.
So, it really isn’t asking for much when we want something we have put a lot of effort into, to give us the results that we think it deserves.
The thing is, I’ve seen a lot of people struggling with valuing their own hard work because they seem to think that it doesn’t deserve the credit that it is due. And because they do so, and because their expectations have been low since the beginning, they don’t really realize how much they underestimate themselves when it comes to their capabilities. It’s a little disappointing to me that so many of us are made to believe that we definitely need to start small and not expect our work to go anywhere.
But the entire point of doing something with a goal set in mind is to go somewhere with it; whether the steps taken are long or short, it is important that we allow ourselves to believe in our own work. It is necessary that we have the determination to move forward instead of expecting to go nowhere from the journey that you are about to take.
Question yourselves.
Ask yourselves why you think your work isn’t worthy of the praise and reach it deserves. Ask yourselves why you don’t think you’d be going anywhere with this. Ask yourselves if you’d take the leap and give yourselves the credit you deserve if the world outside didn’t constantly tell you that you shouldn’t expect much.
Yes, the world is much bigger than you thought it would be. Maybe you cannot map every inch of it. But if you know that you’re going somewhere, you’re only going to want to do better. It isn’t wrong to expect or ask for things that you truly deserve.
Because you should. You should not only expect, but stand up for what you believe your work deserves.
You are so much more than what the world tell you. Xx
