Once again, we have started the NaPoWriMo season, which means, for the rest of the month, you will be seeing me write a lot more than usual… which has been, well let’s just call it close to nothing, lately. Unless you count the stuff I write for work. Then again, this is a dearly loved tradition of mine. I have been doing the #NaPoWriMo Challenge every year for the last few years. I don’t intend to give up on it, no matter how challenging life gets.
One thing I love most about NaPoWriMo season every year is that it allows me to explore different forms of poetry from around the world. I cannot wait to be able to explore more formats this year! It’s always such a good opportunity to read and write in a way that makes me feel like I am a part of something big that other writers like myself are also a part of.
Speaking of which, today’s prompt for the poem via napowrimo.net is to write a Tanka. A Tanka is an ancient Japanese form of poetry with 5 lines that follows a 5/7/5/7/7 syllable format. The website describes a Tanka as a Haiku that decided to keep going. I’ve always struggled with writing shorter forms of poetry, but for some reason, this one seemed to come easily to me.
Here’s today’s poem… or in this case, a Tanka.
The seasons once more
Have turned around, fresh, anew–
Heat where once was dew;
Watching days and nights fly by
Under merciless, cruel Time.

It only felt right to begin the year of NaPoWriMo with a poem that is about the seasons turning around, and the passage of time. Lately, it feels like time is getting away from me, no matter what I do. I feel like I am simply unable to catch up. But I guess that’s the late 20s for you, in this economy, and well, with everything happening around the world, I feel that it is okay to give myself some grace for not having things sorted out in my head.
Let’s be honest, nobody does.
We’re all winging it through life. And that’s alright.
See you tomorrow with another poem?
Cheerio! Xx
