#NaPoWriMo Day 7: Night.

I love nights. All of them.
Nights of balmy summer,
Winter nights, wrapped in blankets,
Hands warm around a cup of soup,
Rainy nights too, taking in
The pitter-patter of raindrops on my window.
And insanely bright full-moons
That keep me up all night, staring.

Not that I’ve ever seen it,
But I do wonder
On more than one occasion,
What the world is like after lights out–
When the streets are silent,
Nature is louder,
And nocturnals, wide awake.
One of these days, maybe
I could step out to explore
The quiet world of night.
But don’t worry, I won’t.
It’s not safe out there, I’ve been told,
For you, for me, for all of us.
Monsters lurk around the corners,
Monsters who walk among us.
“For the night is dark and full of terrors”.

Nights still have their own magic,
And artists are its wizards.
The writer builds kingdoms far away,
The poet scribbles down verses
That came to him once upon a dream,
The painter rejoices in the stillness
And the peace that breathes life into his art.
Night owls aren’t ‘broken’,
And we aren’t ‘out of sync’.
We just work at a different time.
When the world around is fast asleep,
Our powers come out to play.
We rule the night, just like you rule the day.

And so, by my window, I sit,
Night after night, staring outside
And hearing crickets chirp.
Some nights I scribble down words,
On others, I read them,
Drifting off to places unknown,
Until my eyelids can’t hold up any longer.
