We Stayed Here.

I met my best friend, Kriti (Kittu’s Modern Mixtape), after more than a whole year today, and I realized that although we have changed so much in the course of the last year alone, there are some things that will always remain the same. Some bonds are built upon multiple foundations and they’re just too strong to be swayed by anything else. This is a poem dedicated to her: my best friend and soulmate.

Happy reading! Xx

Seasons have gone,
Summers passed us by,
We cried, we smiled,
Deepened laugh-lines,
We’re older now,
And so much wiser,

But we stayed right here
In the house we built–

Painted in the colour of dreams,
A warm ochre,
A cool mint green,
Laughter heard out in streets,
A younger you
And a younger me–

We stayed right here
In the house we built,

Brick after brick,
And piece by piece,
We made a little home
For you and me,
From the fallen wood
Of our fallen dreams,
We pick ourselves up
And look for peace–

But we stayed right here,
Just you and me,
After all the storms we braved,
After drifting the seas.

The seasons have changed,
But we’ll always be
The same old picture
In the frames we keep,
With the same old smiles,
But new miseries,

But we stayed right here
In the house we built–

Painted in sunset gold,
A picture of peace,
Filled with stories untold,
Saved in a box for when we’re old,
Up in the attic,
Collecting dust and mold,

But we stayed right here,
In the house we built

Years and years,
Days stretching to weeks,
We made a little home
For all things silly,
Just the two of us,
Just you and me,
We built a house that’d stand
For centuries,

And we stayed right here,
Along with all our dreams
We nurtured with love
Into big, old trees
That we sit under
Flipping pages to read
The yellowed pages
Of our diaries,

We stayed right here
In moments of peace
Holding onto what matters,
What always will.
