Today has truly been a whirlwind of sorts. I woke up to the internet freaking out over the fact that Taylor Swift has been barred from performing her own music by the people who wouldn’t let her have a fair say in the situation. And as an upcoming writer, I can understand why this is such a big deal. I would feel helpless too if the rights to all of my life’s work were taken away from me. Nobody deserves to feel helpless to the extent of not owning the rights to what they created in the first place.

If you think this isn’t something that actually needs to be talked about, you got another think coming. It’s not about just Taylor Swift, one of the biggest names in music in our time. It’s about all the up and coming artists who can lose the rights to their original work without so much as a chance to earn it back. Imagine working hard your whole life and then being told that you can’t even own the rights to all that work. That is all kinds of wrong, and it’s exploiting somebody’s entire life’s work for a couple million dollars in your pocket.
If Taylor Swift has to go through this think about the underdogs, the artists who haven’t really got their big break yet. It’s not about Taylor but about every artists’ rights on their own music https://t.co/ObppAbpJUw

The world we live in can be very twisted. There will always be people who will try to take credit for what you’ve done. But there’s no reason why we should do absolutely every single thing in our power to make sure that nobody can take away from us what is truly ours. If anything, this whole situation has made me consider in whose hands I’ll put my work, if and when I choose to publish my work.
Often I’ve noticed how much credit people who are in positions of power take for the work done by the work that is solely done by their employees. That wouldn’t have been the case if people could speak up against this kind of behaviour. A lot of us feel threatened in such situations because there is a possibility that we might end up losing our jobs if we raised our voices for what is truly ours. I can assure you that a good leader will always listen to you and give you credit where it’s due. I say this from experience because I have published content on the behalf of a company, while still being able to own the rights to my content.
That being said, let me come to the more important things you need to fight for. And on the very top of that list is you. Always fight for what belongs to you. If you feel like you’re being treated unfairly at any point in life, speak up against it, or seek somebody’s help if you can’t do it alone. I’ve seen my friends go through relationships where they constantly felt like they weren’t valued, and it breaks my heart because they are all genuinely wonderful people who deserve the whole world. I want to tell you guys is that you all deserve so much more than that, so much better than that.
Never undermine yourselves. The world will only value you as much as you value yourself. The more resigned you are to your own worth, the more this world is going to crush you. Never let it come to a point where you feel the need to ask anybody to give you what you rightfully deserve because the right ones will always know and will always value you. But should there be a time when you’re forced to demand your right, don’t be afraid to do it either.
Believe in yourself and never let anybody take away what’s yours.
Cheerio! Xx
