We are all capable of surprising ourselves, sometimes.
There are things we think we can’t do, and we end up proving ourselves wrong at the end of the day. I think a part of us always knows that we can make it if we tried hard enough. Maybe, deep down, we know exactly what we are capable of, and that is something we all need to give ourselves more credit for. We may be going through things that we don’t let show on the surface, but that does not make our struggles any less valid. That does not make us any less capable.
Why is it that when we are asked about what we’re really good at, we find it very hard to put that into words? Why is it difficult for us to understand that we are, in fact, good at what we do, even if we have lots to learn and very far to go? Because learning, as a process, never ceases, at any given point in time. There is always going to be something that we might have realized, even if a tad too late, always going to be something that we might have figured out when we were least concerned about it. There might be things about ourselves that we might not even know yet.
But, as I am reminded almost every day by my friends, we need to give ourselves a lot more credit than we are currently giving, because we all get swept away in our awe for the vast world outside, we barely even think about checking in with ourselves, on most days. It usually comes with the lack of focus, zoning out more often than usual, not having any motivation whatsoever and a bunch of other things that we’re all very well aware of.
I’ve seen people talk about how it’s all just in your head, and I want to tell them that invalidating somebody’s struggles just because you don’t understand what they’re going through isn’t a good look on anybody. Ever. And telling ourselves that we just need to get our act together and simply power through whatever has been weighing us down causes more harm than good. It’s always better to check in with yourself and see how you’re doing. At least that way, you’ll know when you need to take a break from things or how you can try to help yourself out of that.
Some things are a lot more permanent in life than they seem. Yes, things do get better eventually, but a part of whatever held you down the most always remains buried in some corner of you. This is why it is so important to look after yourself, appreciate yourself for everything that you are and get yourself the help you need whenever you need it. We keep joking about how short life really is, but is it really worth anything if we don’t value ourselves enough?
Surely, we could just take some time out for ourselves and actually give ourselves a hand wherever we need it. Of course, we can always turn to others for help. But that isn’t going to work unless we are willing to put in the work where it is needed, is it?
Appreciate yourself a little bit today. Tell yourself that you’re doing good enough. Xx
