An old book, a letter,
A gift from an old friend,
A quick look at an unravelling sweater
That I can no longer mend,
Some dusty dolls, a Raggedy Ann,
A broken tea-set I once played with—
Who knew when life really began
These things would be most missed?
An old drawing I made as a child,
So torn, it’s now taped together,
Memories organized and filed,
Cards we made her, and a random feather.
The knick-knacks my mother keeps!
Hidden in a crevice somewhere,
Away from prying peeps,
Safe, protected with care.
Crates and cases filled to the brim
With keepsakes so dear,
The cherished memories like a synonym,
From fleeting yesteryear.
Sealed away in every home
Underneath beds, in attics, they exist,
Full of secrets, smiles and laughs,
Everybody’s very own treasure chest.
