If I had been asked this question, say, a few months ago, I’d have had absolutely no idea. We’ve all grown up reading or watching superheroes in comic books and movies. At some point, we’ve all had an idea of which superhero we all wanted to be— some original, scrawled with crayons somewhere in our notebooks, some that we idolized from everything we read and watched. And then we’d grab a blanket and pretend it was a cape, zooming around the house because we wanted to feel like one. And then we grew up and gave up wanting to be one. What a shame!
But lately, I’ve realized that I can be my own superhero and not have to wait for somebody else to ‘rescue’ me, and honestly, what a concept! The more I stopped waiting for help, I realized that I could simply rise to the occasion and make things happen. And it feels amazing! I tried to learn something new the other day and I think I did pretty well, considering I had no previous knowledge about digital art. None at all. So maybe a thirst for learning new things is my superpower? Maybe I’m the brainiac kind with the big head. We’ll never know!
My point is, we’re all so good at something or the other. But because we spend the majority of our time trying to be somebody else instead of focusing on ourselves, the best parts of us often go unnoticed. And take it from me, but no amount of external validation is ever going to compare the kind of happiness that springs from appreciating yourself for the effort you’ve put in. It is often the most difficult thing some of us have to do because we never feel like we’re good enough. But guess what? Most of that is just in our heads.
I see all these amazing and talented people around me and I go, ‘Wow, I wish I could do that,’ but then I catch myself in time to remind myself that we’re all different and that I’m good at a lot of other things, so I should appreciate that about myself. It’s so easy to find faults with yourself when you’re comparing yourself to a totally different person. But name two superheroes from the same universe who have the same kind of powers? They’re all singled out because they’re unique. See? That doesn’t sound like a difficult thing to understand, does it?
If you don’t know what it is that you’re good at, just try your hand at everything! Eventually, you’ll find out that one thing that you think is worth sticking to doing and it’ll give you happiness like nothing else ever will. That is what your superpower is! It doesn’t have to be some freak accident that gives you your powers. Dumbo didn’t need the feather to fly, he just thought he did! And pretty much the same way, the superpower you think you don’t have is just buried inside you. Dig a little deeper and work on it. You’ll be unstoppable.
Want to know something even better? You don’t need a cape or fancy spandex suits to define you. You’re doing great right now! Give yourself a pat on the back!
