One thing that has always amazed me is how every single person out there has their own way of doing things. I realized, as I worked on my ongoing artwork, that in spite of being very different from each other, all of my artworks shared the same surreal element. Each one of my artist friends has their own style and I think I’ve been looking at their art for long enough to be able to tell their works apart. Everything, from the colours they use, the way they present their artwork, to the kind of art they choose to make, they all have very unique elements to them.
For a very long time, I have wondered whether my work had something unique about it, whether it was writing or sketching, and it wasn’t until today that I realized that I have a thing for surrealism. There is just something very alluring about things not as they are in reality, but as they look in my head. Things as they could be. Things as they can never be seen by anybody else, ever, unless I choose to realize them through my art. It’s nothing new, obviously! People have done it in the past. People continue to have a surrealist approach to their work, too. I’m not as unique as I think I can be; none of us is. And that is okay because everything is a copy of a copy, give or take a few improvements and additions. That additional element that we put into an idea that already exists is what truly makes our work stand out.
That unique element could be anything and it could be hiding in plain sight. It’s the kind of thing you’ll discover when you’re not even actively looking for an answer, but trust me, it’s a whole lot better when you finally find out what works best for you and what you work best with.
What gives your work that something extra?
