Sometimes, just when you think that you’re completely over something and you go about your life as per usual, that very thing tends to come barrelling back into your life like nothing ever happened, like it didn’t take you a lot of strength to get over. But here’s the thing that we all seem to forget: we’re not going back on our progress if we slip up and find ourselves fighting whatever buried emotions are trying to resurface. It just means that we’re only human and as human beings, it’s only normal to find yourself being wistful sometimes. You’re allowed to do that. It happens to the best of us and it has got nothing to do with your self-restraint or strength.
It takes a lot of strength to walk away from something that you really wanted and it takes a great deal more to keep walking away without turning around even once when these buried ghosts come a-calling. So nobody really thinks that you’re weak if you give in to that little voice in your head that keeps asking you “what if?”. We’re all guilty of having let that voice have its way with us. After all, hope is one of the only things that keeps us going, anyway.
We are allowed to give in to our emotions every now and then. It’s unhealthy to keep them all bottled up inside, anyway! You’re not weak. You’re not going back to everything that you wanted to walk away from. Everybody has their own ways to let go and heal, and I think that we should let people heal on their own terms (unless it’s something severe that definitely needs an intervention), and even then, we need to find the best and least invasive way to bring something like that up. All you need to know it’s that you’re the one in control, and sometimes, things just get a little off-track.
Always know that all the progress you’ve made so far will always belong to you and that it’s okay to allow yourself those little moments of weakness. Don’t be so hard on yourself if you slip up after a period of healing because healing is never that easy! It’s a whole series of ups and downs, but when you look at the bigger picture, you’ll see that you still made a lot more progress than you think you did. And in the end, that is what really matters.
You’re doing better today than you were yesterday, even if you can’t see it happening. You’re doing great.
