You know that feeling when you come up with something that you’re extremely proud of? If you do, then you know the kind of satisfaction that comes along with it. And you also know the kind of crushing disappointment that comes with your hard work going unnoticed. Does it hurt a little bit? You bet, it does! Then again, it gives you all the more reason to keep doing better and keep working harder. If anything, it keeps your mind off of the kind of hurt that a ‘failed’ work brings.
There isn’t anybody to blame, here, to be honest. It’s just that there is way too much out there. The world is huge, and sometimes, things can get lost in that big a crowd, no matter how much they stand out. Sometimes, it takes time for things that get swept away with the tides to show up on the surface. There’s no way to tell when the odds would be in your favour. But that’s no excuse for us to give up on what we love, is it? It’s just a minor setback; a wound that we need to heal from and get back out there.
The thing is, it’s all easier said than done. All the motivation that comes from a work well done suddenly seems like still water. All the reasons we keep giving ourselves to keep going suddenly mean a lot less convincing than they should, otherwise, be.
So, what exactly is it that I find myself doing on such days?
I let myself experience the kind of disappointment that comes with failure despite hard work. There’s no way out of it. It’s like coming down with something and letting yourself get the rest you need before you finally get up and get going, all over again. This is my go-to coping mechanism and it always seems to get me back to doing whatever it is that keeps me happy.
Find the one reason why doing what you do makes you happy and helps you sleep peacefully at night, and I’m sure you’ll find a way to keep going at it. Hold on to what’s important to you. What the rest of the world thinks about it doesn’t really mean a whole lot, most of the time! That shouldn’t stop you from trying your best every single time!
You’ve got this!
Cheerio! Xx
