It surprises me how I have now run out of pages in two different notebooks because they’re all filled with poetry. I realize that I have been writing more and more of it. I can’t believe that there was a time when I thought I could never write anything worthwhile at all, let alone write poetry. But, here I am, doing exactly what I thought I’d never be good at.
Sometimes, the key to being good at something is to be annoyingly stubborn and perseverant about mastering it. Now, I’m not saying that I’ve ‘mastered’ anything, but I know what I’m good at and that’s pretty satisfying! Looking back, I think about all of the things that I gave up on because I wasn’t immediately good at them, and I wonder if I would have made a habit out of those things had I just been a little more stubborn about getting better at doing them. I’m glad I never really gave up on the things that actually matter to me.
It wouldn’t exactly be called ‘progress’ if we were already good at something, would it? Not all of us are prodigies! So, it’s a little funny when people tell me that I was ‘born with the gift of writing’, as if I haven’t spent years trying to get better at it. Believe me, I’m still trying, and I still feel as though I don’t come close to good, at times! But it’s all too natural to feel that way, as I’ve learned over the years.
What you create may not seem like much to you, but there will always be others who appreciate it. I know I say that what we make it mostly just for ourselves sometimes, but other times, they’re for those who are paying attention and those who form a connection with what we put out there in the world. You never know when somebody could truly admire even that which you cannot bring yourself to appreciate about your work.
And that’s the reason we hold on to all that we love. It keeps us going. It serves as a reminder that we are still going somewhere with what we’re doing. It’s a reminder to ourselves to be stubborn and to never give up on something that we want to get better at.
You’re good enough. Have some faith in yourself.
Cheerio! Xx
