What’s a friendship without secrets, right? Not the kind you keep from each other, but the kind that you share with each other because who better than a friend to dish out all the juicy gossip to?
Way back when I was around 12, I got one of those cute little ‘How to Life‘ kinds of books and one of the first things the book said was that sharing secrets makes for better friends. 12-year-old me didn’t understand how that worked because nobody has any worthy secrets at that age.
But 21-year-old me gets it. When you share a secret, an unspoken bond is formed and over a period of time, you share more secrets and it only makes your friendships stronger. Here are 3 reasons why!
1. You begin to trust each other more.
Obviously, when you share a secret with a friend for the very first time, it shows that you value them enough to let them in. Trust breeds trust, but so do secrets. Slowly and steadily, you find yourselves form a mutual bond where you feel comfortable sharing secrets with each other, and in no time at all, you’re much better friends.
2. You’re much more at ease with each other.
When you share secrets with your friends, it’s easy to feel right at home in their company. Because you’ve got nothing to hide, your conversations flow smoothly and you don’t have to hide behind the same old ‘It’s a long story‘ excuse when you hit a dead-end in a heart-to-heart. You’re not afraid to be your true selves around your friends when you share secrets.
3. You become more understanding and protective of each other.
So, you know a secret or two because your friend thought you were worthy enough to share them with you. It’s like finding a missing piece from a tricky jigsaw puzzle that you simply couldn’t find. You now know a little more about your friend and you’d jump to their defence or cover for each other because you know how much keeping the secret means for your friend and there’s no way you’d want to jeopardize that.
Now, I’m not saying that sharing your secrets with your friends is always the way to strengthen your friendships. Secrets in the hands of the wrong person can be a deadly weapon.
So trust your gut and make good choices, okay? Because shutting everybody out has never been a good idea.
