I could swear it was all true,
That you were right here beside me–
The sound of every breath you took,
The way you held my hands in yours,
Wide eyes diving into our very souls,
As though you and I couldn’t get enough,
As though we’ve always wanted more.
For if you were only ever a dream,
You’d be the best thing on my mind
And my head is high up in the clouds.
But when I’m rudely awakened,
You’re gone and my feet are on the ground,
And the memory of your smile disintegrates
Like you were never real,
Like you were really here,
Like I’ve been clinging to a ghost–
But the tug at my little heartstrings,
Every time I let my thoughts wander,
Somehow only lead the way back to you.
Every dream of you leaves me breathless,
Craving for just a little more,
So tell me, do you dream of me too?
Meet me again tonight, it’ll be our secret,
Just tip-toe your way in as you always do,
To a world that’s only a blink away
Where distance doesn’t exist,
Where just about anything can happen.
But when my eyes flutter awake,
Would you still be here?
If dreams could come true,
Mine would be you,
For when I wake up,
I’m always left wanting more.
Today’s prompt via napowrimo.net was to get dreamy, and well, incorporate dream imagery in the poem. We all have those dreams that feel way too real, but when we wake up, we realize that they were just dreams, after all. It happens to me so often, but putting the feeling into words is very different from experiencing it, and I hope I’ve done the prompt the justice it deserves, in my poem! Xx
