This is for all those people who feel that they don’t ‘fit in’. I will always remember the first time my (now) boyfriend told me to be who I am. He said, “Keep doing what you do. You’re perfect at it, I’m sure; and never feel overshadowed because you are a stand-out, more than anybody else.”
It’s amazing how those words changed the way I looked at myself. I had always considered myself to be a complete misfit. I was always so insecure, always worried about making a fool out of myself. But what he said made me see myself in a completely different light. So I felt like passing on this message to all of you beautiful people because I see so many of you trying to change yourself to fit into a mold that is clearly not meant for you. Maybe you are not meant to fit in, you are born to stand out. You are not a misfit, you are beautifully unique. You are one of a kind and you should know how empowering it feels to own your flaws and turn them into something that is wonderfully you.
I have noticed that the media has played a huge role in making people insecure about themselves. What the media portrays as the ‘perfect‘ body shape or personality is a lie- you are a human being, not a pre-programmed clone, or a plastic doll, or a robot. You are bound to have some flaws and that is okay. You might have stretch marks, flab, body hair, acne and the resultant scars, uneven tan lines and what not. But that does NOT make you any less beautiful or desirable. Be comfortable in your own skin. Just keep your head high and smile confidently. People will love you for who you are and not for how you appear. Always remember that. People who judge you by your exterior are definitely not the ones you want to have around yourself.
And it doesn’t just end with looks. People are judged by their hobbies. How do you know that the girl who sits in the corner of the classroom, reading a book, is stuck-up and socially awkward? How do you know that the cute, football playing jock is a dumb, shallow person who is not capable of writing deep, meaningful, romantic poetry? It’s just a common notion, isn’t it? All those stories about the shy girl finally having her ugly-duckling-into-a-swan type of transformations- NO, honey! Just no. That girl did not need her metamorphosis and neither do you. Because, like Bruno Mars said, “You’re amazing, just the way you are.”
You are such a storehouse of talent! Maybe you’re not as good as the next person at painting or writing or whatever it is. But think about all the other cool things that you can do. All those awards that you’ve won, all those things you’ve done to make your family proud- no matter what it was! You do you, and that’s how it’s going to be. Don’t ever change yourself.
So, everyday when you wake up, look into the mirror- no matter what kind of bird-nest bedhead you have, and just remind yourself that you’re perfect in your own way. You don’t have to be anybody else. You’re loved. YOU’RE BEAUTIFUL.
