Do You Remember?

For the first time in my life, I have woken up at 3AM to scrawl out a poem that just came to me in the middle of a really deep sleep. I just thought that this was too good to not write and simply forget about in the morning. The result is a poem that is equal parts personal and foreign to me. It is both from my perspective as well as a fictional perspective. This is just one of those ‘what-if?’ kind of poems that make you think about something you could want, but all you can do is to love from afar. It just felt like an idea that needed to be written down.

Happy reading! Xx

Do you remember
That old patch of grass
We lay our picnic blankets on?
Do you recall
The clearing by the woods?
I still think of the days gone.
Do you ever wonder
What might have been
If you’d never left me behind?
Do you ever think
We can rewrite our stories?
I know how your hands were tied.

I haven’t seen you in years,
But I remember
The smile upon your face–
It has been so long,
But I wonder
If your smile did ever change.
And I still think,
If you’d been around,
You wouldn’t be the same,
So I watch you from far,
And I still love you,
As I’ve done every single day.

Do you remember
Walking me back home
With the promise of tomorrow?
Do you recall
How we laughed our way
Through all the little sorrows?
Do you ever wonder
What might have been
If we’d grown up together that way?
Do you ever think
Things could be different
If only you had stayed?

I haven’t heard it in years,
But I remember
Your laughter like yesterday,
I think of you too often,
And I wonder,
If you do, the same way;
And I still think
If you’d been around,
I’d mean more to you than today,
So I watch you from afar,
And I still love you,
As I’ve done every single day.

Do you remember
The last time we parted,
When I’d said I’d see you soon?
Do you recall
The promise you made
When you said you’d missed me too?
Do you ever wonder
If we stand a chance
If only we’d open our eyes?
Do you ever think
This is all just a dream
And our hands are still tied?

It has been too many years,
But your memories,
I’ve kept them safe,
They’ve kept me company
When I’ve felt too lost,
But I yearn for you today.
And I still think,
If we stood a chance,
Nothing would stand in our way,
But I watch you from afar,
And I do still love you,
As I’ve done every single day.
