I don’t know which part of the world you’re reading this from, but in India, today happens to be the day when we celebrate the bond of siblings! So, making the most of the occasion, I decided to write about something that I have to face on a daily basis: my brother. Well, siblings in general, really.
Apart from the fact that you grew up under the same roof and have to deal with each other anyway, there is a lot more to the sibling relationship than just rivalry and being responsible for each other. You may not even realize it, but siblings grow on you in a way that no one else ever can.
So here are 5 incredibly accurate reasons why your siblings are your best friends, even though you may not want to admit it right now. But don’t worry, I can keep a secret.
1. You know each other better than anybody else.
I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but whether you’re twins or not, you share this telepathic connection with your siblings. You don’t even have to say the actual words sometimes; you just know what they’re thinking. I can’t tell you how many times my brother has randomly played the song I had in my head for hours. It’s freakish but pretty damn cool.
2. You know each others’ secrets.
Of course, when you grow up together (bonus if there isn’t too much of an age difference) you’ve started to pick up on all of their tells. So you know when there’s something totally off about their behaviour. And sooner or later, siblings either find out everything about each other or tell each other everything.

3. You’ll cover for each other.
Although most sibling relationships are catfights and disputes, when push comes to shove, you will cover for each other. It’s almost an unspoken rule where you have to protect your sibling, no matter what. You might not always see eye-to-eye, but you can always count on them to defend you.
4. You’re each other’s main support system.
Sibling friendships are very complicated. But I don’t know where the loyalty springs from in times of need, but from my experience, I can tell you that my brother and I have defended each other countless times from our parents. I may mock him when he comes to me asking ‘Can you talk to Dad about XYZ?‘, but I’d do anything for my brother. And I’m sure you all would support your siblings too.

5. You share inside jokes and references.
When you have spent almost your entire life with someone, you start to understand each other better and come up with your own form of communication. You probably share inside jokes that your parents wouldn’t understand even if you were to shout a random word from across the room. You have your own, weird ways.
6. You are each other’s biggest fans.
Although your parents may beg to differ, saying that they are your biggest fans, it’s the siblings who are most proud of your accomplishments. They either look up to you or they are your role model. So it makes sense why they would cheer the loudest when you achieve something in your life.

7. You can’t hold a grudge against them to save your life.
Siblings are probably the only people in this world who will fight you and then ask you if you want to grab dinner 20 minutes later. I am not even kidding! This is sibling culture at its peak and I’m pretty sure everybody can relate to this. You just cannot hate them.
8. They’re the only ones who are allowed to annoy you.
If anybody else so much as tries to do so, they’d probably be locked in an attic somewhere, but siblings are allowed. The only reason that makes sense here is that you’re used to them annoying you, but you love them anyway. Admit it, you’d be bored without your sibling making weird faces at you.

9. You play life by the same rules.
If your upbringing was anything like mine and you grew up with your sibling, you’ll understand that they were brought up with the same values as you. So it’s no surprise that they’d do the same thing as you when they’re caught between a rock and a hard place. It’s not that you aren’t your own person, but you do share a lot of opinions anyway.
10. They make the ultimate partner-in-crime.
Late-night ice-cream runs? Munching on a bag of potato wafers, guilt-free? Impromptu movie plans? Instagram photographer? Planning a surprise for your parents? Whatever it is, they are 100% in and they will help you.
No matter how annoyed you are with your sibling right now, I’m pretty sure that you love them all the same and you’re smiling as you read this! Because even though you may not show it, you’ll be there for each other no matter what life throws your way.
Cheerio! Xx
