I’m big on social media, as in, I’m always active on social media because whether you believe it or not, it always gives me ideas to write relevant content. That’s not to say that I use people for content, but inspiration is everywhere, right? You never know what can get you thinking. And today, I noticed that a lot of people going through a bad place when it comes to communicating with the people in their lives.
You see, technology has evolved to a point where the sum total of our thoughts and feelings can be put across in under 280 characters including emojis. And even though we have the option to talk to people across the world face-to-face because of video calls, there’s far too many of us who just want to isolate ourselves and push away those who would jump hoops to be there for us.
And after all of that, we still somehow have the audacity to complain about being lonely. This is something that goes both ways. You cannot cut yourself off from the world, build a thousand walls and expect people to still break through to you. Also, you cannot disregard the place that some people hold in your life and expect it to stay the same after you’ve stopped checking in on them completely. Communication is a two-way street and a lot of us need to grow up and simply talk things out.
There are things that your friends might be going through at the moment, things that they cannot bring up on their own. This is why need to make sure that we reach out to those we care about, every single chance we get. We may not always get answers, let alone honest ones, but at least the people we love will know that they’re not alone. We cannot control what others do. But what we can do is not shut or push people off.
What is it going to take for all of us to realize that shutting everybody out is not the answer to our problems? Unfortunately for all of us, people cannot communicate telepathically yet; those who can, I have mad respect for you. I see everybody getting mad at their significant others because they couldn’t ‘take a hint’, as in, they didn’t automatically know what their partners were thinking. But that’s not how it should be. A relationship, any relationship, should be based on communication. That doesn’t work until you put things out in the open and ‘expect them to understand’.
Are we, in 2019, still not able to grasp such a simple concept to let petty thoughts take over the meaningful relationships in our lives? Things would be so much easier if we were just willing to be grown-ups about it, enough to sit down, have a heart-to-heart and clear the misunderstandings. Things that your smartphone cannot do for you. Things that Alexa, Google or Siri cannot do for you.
Take the first step and communicate! Don’t let misunderstandings ruin the relationships that you hold dear. Be above this.
