The toughest thing that any of us will ever have to do is turning down the easy path to success especially when it is staring us in the face. Over the last year, I’ve made more than one of these hard decisions and I have never looked back at the things that I’ve had to turn down, no matter how shiny they looked on the outside. I know that I wouldn’t be where I am today if I had taken the easier road— maybe doing so would have sped up the whole process, but at what cost? I’d have everything I want, but not happiness.
And wasn’t happiness and satisfaction the whole reason why I chose to do what I do today? At any given moment, we’re looking at two paths. One is easy, almost like a shortcut, highly tempting, but there’s always a catch. Nothing is ever that easy. This might seem like an outdated piece of advice, but you’ll be surprised how often people settle for the easier path just because they’re afraid they don’t exactly have the time to spare. On the other hand, there is a tougher, terrifying path which might seem like a drag initially, but you’ll eventually see why the results are actually worth all the hard work.
I’ve always been told that the journey matters just as much as the destination, if not, more! And if we’re not happy or satisfied with what we have achieved, no amount of money or success is going to fill the void in your heart, no matter how actively we seek it. The only way to true happiness is to work for it, even if it takes us a little longer than we thought it would. And let me tell you this, the hard way is never as shiny or glossy as the easier one. But it’s for that very reason that the results feel a lot more rewarding at the end of the road.
Even though I have a lot more left to see in this world, I’m convinced that true fulfilment comes from something that is truly earned and not something that is given to us without any conditions. We only value the people and things that we fight to keep in our lives. Everything else that is given to us on a silver platter will never, ever be as meaningful, no matter how much we say otherwise. I’m sure there are exceptions, just like everything else. But it is making the hard decisions and choosing the tougher path that make it worth all of the fight.
Whether it’s something as simple as texting your crush first, or something bigger like starting your own business, or something even bigger like quitting your job for something you value a lot more. Each one of them will offer you an easy way out, or a battle. And hey, I am nobody to tell you which one you need to choose for yourself. I get the allure that taking the easy road has. Nobody is going to judge you for taking the easy way. But when the time comes and it will, make sure you are prepared to make those hard decisions in life because those are the ones that nobody can help you make.
It has to be you, nobody else.
