Zoning Out.

I spent most of today curled up with my favourite book under my blanket, taking cat-naps in between and keeping my phone on silent for the better part of the day because I felt like I needed to stay away from everything in general for some time. As far as self-love and self-care are concerned, I’m guessing I hit the ball right out of the park because I feel a lot better right now than I did when I woke up this morning. My head is much clearer.

Somebody called doing this the ‘equivalent to restarting your phone when it starts acting up’. As funny as that might sound to us right now, I know for a fact that this works because every time I have felt like I was finding it harder to function without lashing out at everything about my day, I have completely zoned myself out for a while and then come back feeling much better about things.

Sure, it might not work out the same way for everybody because we all have such different problems in life. What works for me may or may not apply to you. But here’s what I have learned over the years: things can take a toll on us badly if we let them go on for too long. Think of it like a bottle left under the tap for too long; if you know when to turn off the tap, there’s just enough water, but if you let it go on for too long, water just overflows and wastes away.

And just like that, if we don’t figure out when to catch a proper break, or when to take our mind off of things that are way too much for us to wrap our heads around, we’re going to end up like an overflowing bottle with nowhere left for all of our feelings to go. Now I understand that zoning out completely or switching off completely may not be an option for a lot of us, but take whatever little break you can once in a while to keep yourself functioning without whatever the human equivalent of a glitch is.

Nothing, and I repeat, nothing is ever as important as your health, whether it’s physical, mental or emotional. People could be fighting out there, and you could be one of the people fighting for what’s right, but eventually, we all tire out. Even the seemingly ‘inexhaustible’ source of energy in the world is bound to fizzle out someday. We’re just tiny, tiny specks in this mind-blowing expanse of infinity— we don’t stand a chance! No matter how much science progresses.

And no, I didn’t mean that as an insult. Life is all about knowing that we are not ever going to be in control of the Universe or whatever it’s going to throw our way. It’s about knowing all of that, but still making sure that every moment counts. And guess what? There won’t be much left to count if we aren’t in the right headspace for it. Of course, life can be a big, horrible roller-coaster. Some days are the best of our lives. Ones we’d want to cherish forever. Some are ones you want to forget because they’re too painful to look back at. But that’s okay because that’s just how life goes.

And if at all you’re feeling lost about what to do to feel better, talk to a friend or somebody else you’d trust. Don’t be afraid or ashamed to ask for help when you need it. Things in this world are as hard as they can get. But they don’t have to bring us down, not if we can help it. Because when the Universe puts up a fight, we fight back harder.

Don’t just survive. Thrive!

Cheerio! Xx
