I’ve always grown up believing that a relationship of any kind should be that of equality and partnership because it’s what I see between my parents every single day. And one of the most overlooked topics today is the kind of friendship that we share with our romantic partners.
Some might want to consider their partner among their best friends, and some might not want to put all their eggs in the same basket. Of course, there isn’t a right or wrong way to go about relationships because everybody seems to work it out in a very different way. But how can you expect a smooth road if you don’t consider your partner close enough the way you consider your best friend?

It’s not rocket science, but it is tricky! So, allow me to convince you why your partner should be your best friend:
1. No surprises along the way.
We all share just about everything with our best friends, don’t we? There is hardly anything that our best friends wouldn’t know about us. The same way, being best friends with your partner can make sure that you two don’t have any unpleasant surprises up your sleeve. If all your secrets are out in the open, there isn’t anything to hide and that’s super healthy!
2. You can be yourself with them— including the good, bad and ugly.
I think that the point a lot of people seem to miss is that your partner isn’t a person whom you should pretend to be someone else for. We are most comfortable around people we can be ourselves with. So for a healthy relationship, you should also be best friends who love each other exactly for who you are.

3. Disagreements are much less damaging.
I know couples who started right off the bat as romantic partners and they couldn’t stand each other sometimes. I know there are other factors that come into play here, but when you’re best friends with somebody, you reconcile quickly and your fights and disagreements are not as damaging as they’d be if you’re simply romantic partners.
4. You’re much more comfortable in the relationship.
Couples who consider each other best friends don’t have to call each other all the time to let their partners know they’re on each others’ minds. In fact, if your partner is also your best friend, you are much more secure in your relationship and there isn’t any room for petty jealousy or suspicion. You know you’re in a good place where you can relax.

5. You know about each others’ pasts.
Exes? Dark sides? Rock bottoms? Complicated families? You know everything about your partner when you’re truly best friends. There is no reason to doubt each other because you already know everything and you’re cool with where you stand in your relationship right now.
6. It’s easier to let your crazy side out with them.
You’re not afraid to do fun, crazy, child-like things together like a date at the trampoline pit, whipped cream fights in the kitchen, or dramatic duets with a funny twist to your favourite Disney soundtracks. When your partner is also your best friend, you can let your hair down with them just like you’d do on a girls’ or guys’ night out.

7. You connect with each other on a better level.
When you consider your partner your equal or your best friend, you also find it much easier to share things with them without the fear of judgement. Because you already know everything about each other, it is also easier to just sit down and talk about random things when you have a lot on your mind.
8. You can count on them to take your side.
Although taking each other’s side is one of the most important things it takes to make any relationship work, when you also consider each other best friends, this gets a lot easier to do. There is no reason for you to question where each others’ loyalties lie because you are pretty secure in your relationship. Consider being best friends a bonus here.

9. Silences aren’t uncomfortable.
When it comes to a best friend, we are all comfortable with being silent and just showing each other a funny meme or tweet that we come across, without the need for small talk. That is the level of comfort and ease that should also exist in your romantic relationships. Simply being in each other’s company is enough when your partner is also your best friend.
10. That being said, you can also talk for hours and not run out of things to say.
There is just so much tea we have to spill when we talk to our best friends, isn’t there? The same is true when you consider your partner your best friend. They want to know about every little detail of your day and you want to know the same about theirs. When you truly connect, there is no reason why you shouldn’t share everything with them.
