I remember that one of the first things that my boyfriend ever told me, even before we started dating, was that he’d never try to ‘control’ me or hold me back from doing what I wanted because I was strong enough to do that. It might have been one of the things that told me that he was the one.
Till date, he has been nothing but supportive and encouraging no matter how crazy I get; he’s like the calm to my crazy-pants. Besides love, I think that the very foundation for us lies in the amount of respect and support we have for each other as individuals, as well as for each other’s goals and dreams.
That kind of connection is rare. It obviously goes without saying that respecting and supporting the people you love is a very important aspect of any kind of relationship in your life. It is assumed that these things come naturally when you love somebody, but that’s not what usually happens.
So many times, we put up with people, whether they’re a partner or a friend, or sometimes even family, who do not support neither respect us nor our choices. And the only reason we don’t do anything about it is that we’re afraid we’ll end up all alone. What we need to understand is that this kind of negativity can be extremely draining for our own mental health.
It has taken me a few years to get here, but I run as far away from people who cannot respect my choices and try to control my life. The right ones would try to do that to you. It all happens under the innocent guise of ‘being a well-wisher’, and I realized that it was holding me back in so many ways. I cannot tell you how much I have been able to grow because I erased these people from my life.
To me, love, support and respect, all come under the same roof, even though they are great traits individually. Together, they’re much, much stronger in forging a bond between people.
So yes, I truly do believe that love cannot exist between people who do not respect or support each other through all the highs and the lows. Stick by the people you love. Be their pillars of strength. Let love be your strength.
