“What’s the rush? Time-out. Trust me. Your problems are still going to be there when you get home. Look. Step away from your life for 5 minutes.”
–Damon Salvatore to Elena Gilbert, The Vampire Diaries, S01E11- ‘Bloodlines’.
Hustling is important if you want to be successful, true. But that success is going to be useless if you are not physically or mentally healthy enough to celebrate it. Now while most of you may agree that once we achieve our goals, we can take a step back and enjoy for a while, let me tell you that it’s never going to happen. With one success comes the thirst for more, and we decide to dive right back into our crazy, fast-paced lives.
Don’t be so hard on yourself! Everything has a certain limit, and so do you. Now, unless you wanna start your slow spiral to insanity, I suggest you ‘step away’ from your life for a while. Discover yourself. Go out on a lunch date. A road trip. Take out your sketch-pad. Write something. Literally anything that is going to help you escape your worries and relax. You can’t escape reality, but you definitely can give yourself the time-out that I’m sure you deserve.
Years from now, when you look back at how far you have come in life, you shouldn’t have that tiny twinge of regret because you missed out on making memories. Yes, you might appreciate yourself for the amount of sacrifices you made to get there, but you can’t go back in time to catch up on whatever you have missed. So make sure it doesn’t come to that. Just because you work hard, doesn’t mean that you can’t cut yourself some slack.
Make memories, put yourself out there and leave your comfort zone behind, document your life by taking tons of photos, journal everything, loosen up and live a little. You never know, you might even end up surprising yourself. The countless sleepless nights that you spend working so hard to find your place in the rat-race won’t mean anything if you forget to take care of yourself. Your success will mean nothing if you cannot enjoy it.
There’s a reason why the best ideas always come to those who think with a relaxed mind. Their thoughts are organized and they are more focused on solving the problem rather than being worried about it. A calm mind is nothing short of a weapon. Even mountaineers agree that it is important to take a break every once in a while on the way to the top. Because, let’s face it, we can only push ourselves so far. We’re fragile, not invincible.
If not me, then listen to Damon Salvatore, guys! He’s right. Your problems are not going anywhere. You might as well take a break and get back into the thick of things once you are well-fed and well-rested. You’ll be able to tackle your problems better that way.
Close your eyes. Breathe, Better yet, go to sleep. But #TreatYoself.
