“No but small victories, Tyler. Last night was a victory. You know, let’s take it.”
-Caroline Forbes to Tyler Lockwood, The Vampire Dairies, S02 E12, The Descent.
Ah, Caroline Forbes! My spirit animal, my inspiration to be a sparkly, sunny person full of light and glitter. It’s no secret that Caroline’s dangerously high levels of optimism rubbed off on me and have, ever since, made me look at the brighter side of things. But ‘small victories’ is one of my favorite quotes by Caroline because it keeps me rooted to the moment I’m living in. It makes me seize whatever chance I have at happiness, even though I don’t have the slightest idea about what my future has to offer.
The very idea behind ‘small victories’ is to make sure that you take a shot at being happy with all the little things that come your way. Celebrate your life every time you get the smallest reason to do so. It could be anything- a discount coupon, extra ice cream, the last slice of pizza, the feeling when you hand over your answer sheets on your last exam, fitting into an old pair of jeans that you thought you’d have to dispose of, etc. The more reasons you find to be happy, the more satisfied you’ll be with life.
Now, this might seem like a very repetitive blog post because I stress on the importance of living in the present way too often. But I feel that maybe it’s what we’ve been doing wrong all this time. We’ve all been so busy worrying about our future that we completely sidelined the present. We should learn to be happy with whatever we have achieved in the present and then work to improve ourselves for our future endeavours.
We don’t know what crap the world is going to go to tomorrow. There’s no way we’ll ever know for sure what is going to happen. So the logical thing to do is to live it up and prioritize your own happiness. You care about others? Great! It means that you’re an amazing person. But where do you stand in your list of priorities? In the process of taking care of everyone else around you and spreading happiness, don’t forget to take your shot at happiness. It’s okay if you care about yourself every once in a while. No one can call you selfish for making yourself the one thing that you want to work on.
Just remember to treat yourself to something nice every time you emerge victorious. Boost yourself and be your own hype team. Look into the mirror everyday and give yourself a pep-talk every morning. I believe in you. You are doing great right now and you will continue doing so, too. Live in the now and go for it whenever life gives you a shot at being happy.
