You know how they say that ‘The road to Hell is paved with good intentions’?
After 26 days of writing about self-care, I realized that it wasn’t really the best idea that I’ve had in a while. I say this because we’re all so different, and when I originally thought about writing on self-care and self-love for this entire month, I didn’t consider the fact that everybody has different needs.
In hindsight, the content for this entire month was a very bad idea because it’s not up to me, not up to anybody to tell you why and how you should be taking care of yourself. It’s way out of line and because I haven’t had a first-hand experience to what you all are going through, I cannot be the one telling you that you need to start taking better care of yourselves.
It doesn’t work that way because self-care is not one-size-fits-all. What works for me doesn’t necessarily have to work for you. In fact, most things in life are unique unto everybody. If there’s anything I’ve realized about self-care and self-love over time, it’s that they’re an extensive process of trial-and-error. What’s the worst that can happen anyway?
Think of it as something similar to your taste in movies, music or food. It may or may not be the same as everybody else’s. And yet, there are one or two things that might work for you temporarily. You may get used to it, or it could be just a one-time thing. That’s completely on you. But how would you know if you never made an attempt to get better? Things like that don’t magically happen unless you actually put in the effort.
But there is always the possibility of outgrowing your coping mechanisms because we are dynamic beings. The wheels of change are always turning and I don’t think anyone is ever stagnant, even if we do feel like we’re going nowhere in particular. It’s fascinating to me how we’re always moving, even when we think we aren’t.
One year ago, I wouldn’t have imagined being where I am today, but I’m still here, still standing, still hustling to make something out of myself. The only difference is that I’m a lot closer to achieving the things I wanted in life now than I was a year ago. And it’s true for each and every one of you.
So, even though this might not be the best way to do it, I want you all to find your go-to methods of healthy self-care. Find your happy place. Try a bunch of coping mechanisms and if nothing works, there is always therapy to consider. I say this because Googling self-love and self-care has never helped anybody and I doubt I can make people see that.
We all have an incredibly complicated relationship with ourselves and unless and until we sit down and have a heart-to-heart with ourselves, I don’t think any of us is going to truly let the past go or heal.
So, here’s hoping that I’ll do a better job trying to get my point across in the next few days than I did in the last 26 days combined! Thanks for sticking around this far.
